District hosts groundbreaking at new elementary school
On April 22, district leaders gathered for a groundbreaking at the site of the new elementary school, set to open for the 2026-27 school year. The new 125,000 square foot elementary school will serve Pre-K through fifth grade and is located in the growing northwest portion of Maple Grove.
Superintendent Dr. Kim Hiel, board members, district cabinet members and the principal of the new school, Patrick Smith, gathered to celebrate the beginning of construction and thank the voters for the passage of the Building a Better Future referendum.
“This is more than just a construction project. This is a symbol of progress and a bright future that we are all building together,” Dr. Hiel said at the groundbreaking. “Thanks to the overwhelming support of our community and the successful passage of the stakeholder-approved bond, we are here today to turn vision into reality. At Osseo Area Schools, we are proudly committed to becoming One Community for All, and this new elementary school is just another step toward that mission.”
For Smith, being named principal of the new elementary school is not just a new role but the realization of a long-held dream. Throughout his career, he has envisioned the opportunity to build a school from the ground up-one that fosters innovation, inclusivity and excellence for every student. Smith brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for education. He began his teaching career in the Robbinsdale School District as a third and fourth grade teacher, instructional assistant and elementary principal. Over the past 13 years in Osseo Area Schools, he has served as an elementary principal, interim assistant superintendent, and currently as principal of Maple Grove Middle School. His leadership is defined by his commitment to student-centered, equity-focused and collaborative learning environments, making him the perfect fit to serve as the founding principal of the new elementary school.
“It is very exciting to be here on the site and see the work getting started,” Smith said. “I am ready to get rolling!”
Over the next year, Smith and other district leaders will be deeply engaged in the planning, development and launch of the new school, working closely with students, families, staff and the broader Osseo community to ensure a strong foundation for success. They are eager to create a learning environment that is student-centered, equity-focused and welcoming to all.
