Fall sports wrap-up

The Minnesota State High School League’s 2023 fall tournament season is winding down, and teams from Osseo Area Schools’ three comprehensive high schools represented their schools and the district admirably. Here’s a look at how state-bound teams fared so far this fall:

Boys cross country 

The Osseo Senior High (OSH) boys team were one of 16 AAA schools to compete as a full team at the state event, which took place Nov. 4 at the University of Minnesota’s Les Bolstad Golf Course. They placed 13th as a team, with senior Cade Sanvik leading them with a fifth place finishing time of 15.28 for the five kilometer race. He was followed by junior Quinlan Rundquist in 16.37 and senior Earl Peter in 17.00. 

Maple Grove Senior High (MGSH) junior Gannon Farrens qualified for the state race as an individual, where he finished in 95th place of 160 runners with a time of 16.48. 

Girls cross Country 

The girls state championship race took place the same date and location as the boys, where MGSH qualified to run as a team and placed 14th. Top runners for the team included sophomore April Watson in a time of 18.51 (14th place), seventh grader Dakota Laux in 20.13 and junior Kelsey Young in 20.30.  

OSH senior Jules Davis qualified to run as an individual, where she placed 53rd in a time of 19.32. 

Football

Though the state championship game doesn’t take place until Nov. 24, football has wrapped up for the season for Osseo Area Schools’ teams. MGSH advanced to the section finals opposite of Edina on Nov. 3, where they fell 35-24.

Boys soccer

The MGSH boys team started their 3A state tournament play with a win over Andover in the quarterfinals, 1-0. The team then advanced to the semifinals at U.S. Bank Stadium, where they pulled off an exciting 2-1 overtime win over Park High School on Nov. 1, giving them their first experience at a state championship game in 25 years. The Crimson lost to Wayzata in the championship game Nov. 3 and finished the tournament in second place. 

Girls soccer

Maple Grove Senior High School’s girls soccer team made it to the semifinals level of the Class AAA state tournament, besting White Bear Lake 2-1 in the quarterfinals before falling to Wayzata on Oct. 31. 

Girls tennis

MGSH girls won their first round team match in the 5AA state tournament against Elk River on Oct. 24, 4-3 at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center. MGSH Summer Ode won her singles round, and three doubles also won: Char Bakke and Amelia Larson, Peyton Weigelt and Lexi Helmer-Jahnke, and Livia Walseth and Addison Doherty. 

The Crimson then faced off against Rochester Mayo the next day, losing 6-1. They finished the season with a fourth place finish at the state tournament. This was their first appearance in the state semifinals.

Girls swimming and diving

The MGSH girls swimming team placed fifth overall in the state tournament. 

MGSH freshman Morgan Thompson, junior Libby Bakker, sophomore Maddie Hetland and junior Kaya Flaherty placed third in the 200 Yard Medley Relay. 

MGSH junior Libby Baker placed third in the 100 Yard Backstroke and fourth in the 200 Yard IM. 

MGSH freshman Morgan Thompson, junior Charlotte Woods, junior Kaya Flaherty and junior Libby Bakker placed fifth in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. 

MGSH junior Kaya Flaherty placed fifth in the 100 Yard Butterfly and 12th in the 50 Yard Freestyle. 

MGSH junior Ellis Landry placed sixth in 1 meter Diving. 

MGSH sophomore Maddie Hetland placed 15th in the 100 Yard Butterfly. 

MGSH freshman Morgan Thompson placed 16th in the 100 Yard Freestyle.

Adapted soccer

The Park Center Pirates Adapted Soccer, CI team, representing all three high schools, competed in the quarterfinals of the state tournament, losing 9-8 to Stillwater/Mahtomedi. They went on to compete in the Consolation bracket, losing 9-8 to the South Suburban Jets. 

The Park Center Pirates Adapted Soccer, PI team, representing all three high schools, competed in the quarterfinals of the state tournament, losing 5-4 to Dakota United Hawks. The Pirates won their first game in the Consolation bracket, beating the Anoka-Hennepin Mustangs 5-2 but ultimately losing in the Consolation Championship of the state tournament to St. Paul Humboldt by one goal.
