Multilingual Academy wraps up summer session

Osseo Area Schools offers a Multilingual Academy summer program each year that is open to all of its multilingual students, and around 150 students spend a month of summer engaged in a wide variety of activities with students from all around the district.

Despite the camp’s name, Multilingual Academy’s scope of topics goes far beyond language-related activities. While it does feature heritage language classes, where students can learn Hmong, Spanish and Vietnamese, along with a world language class, Multilingual Academy’s breadth of opportunities and subjects is wide-ranging. The camp teaches math, reading, writing and English skills. Students can delve into art projects, crafts, interpretive dance classes, outdoor sports, board games, financial literacy skills, book clubs, American Sign Language classes and more. Participants take part in both on-site and off-site field trips to widen their experiences even further.

Stacia Krell, an English language (EL) teacher at Oak View Elementary School and a Multilingual Academy teacher, said the best part of this program has been the increased confidence that participating students get and the networking and new friendships students can make with others from multilingual households.

“I think what stands out most for me is our focus on the i-ACT skills, which are 21st century skills that encompass interpersonal relationship skills, adaptability, flexibility, cross-cultural communication, teamwork and more.”

“We pack a lot in,” Krell added. “It’s five weeks of nonstop fun.”
