Weaver Lake hosts STEM in Action family night

Scholars from Weaver Lake: A Science, Math & Technology School had an opportunity to show off what they’ve learned in their value-added science, engineering, technology and math (STEM) curriculum so far this school year at a family event Nov. 16. 

The school invited all of its students and families into classrooms that evening, where teachers had the first trimester’s STEM projects and learning materials laid out for their students to explain and show off to families and caregivers. 

In the first trimester, Weaver Lake scholars focused on the following topics for their STEM curriculum:

Kindergarten: Needs of plants and animals
Grade 1: Light and sound
Grade 2: Plant and animal relationships
Grade 3: Spinning Earth
Grade 4: Lake study
Grade 5: Ecosystem restoration

Jen Gaab, the school’s curriculum integration coordinator, said scholars played the roles of both questioner and creator in all of these projects, and they all included some type of engineering project that each student created and revised after testing their creations.
